Ice skaters from the Piney Orchard Figure Skating Team captured 17 gold
medals in 25 events, earning the second place team trophy at the annual
Laurel Ice Skating Institute (ISI) figure skating competition January 21
at Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Md.
In taking the runner-up trophy behind the host team from Laurel, the
Odenton-based figure skating team ended their day as they have the past
three seasons -- for the fourth consecutive year, the POFST finished as
the top visiting team competing in Laurel's one-day event. Twelve ISI
figure skating squads representing Maryland, Virginia and Delaware teams
were on hand.
Of the 17 gold medals, 14 were won in individual and couples events.
Leading the Piney Orchard effort were Ashley Peterson of Denton, Annie
Rackley of Crofton, and Aunna Stoll of Davidsonville. All three captured
two individual gold medals. Peterson took top honors in Freestyle 5 and
Artistic Freestyle 5 events. Rackley claimed first place honors in
Freestyle 4 and Freestyle 4 spotlight competition, while Stoll won her
Freestyle 3 and Artistic Freestyle 3 events.
The only other multiple medal winner in individual competition was
Crownsville's Emily Urgo - a gold medal winner in her Freestyle 3 event
and a silver medal recipient in Freestyle 3 spotlight competition. Other
individual gold medal winners included Emily Santoriello of Annapolis
(Freestyle 1), Millersville's Melissa Stanley (Artistic Freestyle 1),
Odenton's Danielle Furlong (Freestyle 4), Severn's Suzanne Lardeo
(Freestyle 4 Gold), April Nasiatka of Annapolis (Delta) and Odenton's
Alexandra Barrett (Dance 4).
In addition to Urgo's silver medal, three other POFST skaters earned
second place individual finishes. Those skaters were Riva's Laura Seal
(Freestyle 2), Crofton's Jessica Kennedy (Freestyle 4) and Megan Barrett
of Odenton (Dance 4). Bronze medals were awarded to Crofton's Megan
Stilling (Freestyle 4) and Rachael Layfield of Pasadena (Freestyle 2).
Megan and Alexandra Barrett also teamed to win the gold medal in Couples
Freestyle 4 Spotlight competition.
Medals for ISI competitions are awarded to skaters in categories arranged
by age, gender and skating level.
The Laurel competition also saw the 2002 POFST Synchro team win its first
gold medal of the season. Team members skating in Laurel included Megan
and Alexandra Barrett, Laura Seal, Emily Urgo, Aunna Stoll, Melissa
Stanley, Annie Rackley, Danielle Furlong, Megan Stilling, Heather
Buchanan of Glen Burnie, Elkridge's Nahomy Rojas, Pasadena's Kaitlyn
Wilson and Severn's Melissa Windsor. A 14th member - Odenton's Gina
Blades - was unable to skate at Laurel due to illness.
Also successful were POFST's four jump and spin teams, which accounted
for two gold and two silver medals. Taking first place medals were the
POFST Red Team (Urgo, Layfield, Seal and Wilson) and the POFST Green Team
(Santoriello, Stoll, Stanley and Windsor). Teams claiming silver medals
were POFST Blue (Lardeo, Kennedy and Rackley) and POFST Yellow (Stilling,
Furlong and Peterson).
