Piney Orchard Figure Skating Team "Melts the Ice" in its first 2009 Competition
The outside temperature may have been warm, but the Piney Orchard Figure
Skating Team was truly melting the ice at Bowie Valentine's Invitational
Competition, endorsed by the recreational Ice Skating Institute, on
Sunday, February 8, 2009. Even with a few quirks the Production Team won
the first place Gold Medal. Produced by Coach Amy McPartland with the help
of Katie Grace, members of the team ranging in age from 5 to 17 skated through
a mix of songs sporting the theme of "Time," including scrambling "9 to 5" workers,
a gentle flowing "Time After Time" sequence, and roaring "Rock Around the Clock"
poodle-skirted skaters encircling a leather jacketed gang complete with 6 years
olds Kylie Bulger of Crofton and Peyton Behling of Millersville sliding in on a
real motorcycle.
The senior synchronized skating team "Icettes" with their rendition of N-Sync songs and junior team "Starlettes" melody of "Candy" themed songs both under the direction of Skating Director Linda Monney, took home silver medals respectively. The POFST team also saw many successes with over 40 individual event entries. Six year old Kylie Bulger of Crofton wore home 3 individual medals, Silver for Delta, gold for Light Entertainment Spotlight Delta, and along with Peyton Behling (6) of Millersville, a gold for Light Entertainment Spotlight Couples. Peyton also earned a bronze medal for Delta. Seven year old Lauren Bulger of Crofton also earned a gold medal for Light Entertainment Spotlight FS4 as well as Regan Ellis, 8, of Odenton. A silver medal in the same Spotlight FS4 division was worn home by 10 year old Allison Fortney of Millersville, with a bronze medal going to Lauren Donnelly (11) of Hanover. Alex Newcomb (15) of Odenton also won a bronze medal for Light Entertainment Spotlight FS4. Six year old Deanna Middlebusher of Laurel won two gold medals in FS Stroking 2 and Solo; Kylie Bulger silver in Delta, with Peyton Behling taking bronze. In individual Freestyle 2, 8 year old Molly McAteer of Annapolis, and 11 year old Ally Yates of Glen Burnie each earned a gold medal in their respective divisions, while Deanna Middlebusher earned silver. In FS 4 Lauren Bulger, Allison Fortney, and Erica Rosaco (10) of Shipley's Choice, each earned a gold medal, Madelyn McAteer (10) of Annapolis, Lauren Donnelly, Audrey Simmons (13) of Odenton, and Caroline Horsch (13) of Severna Park, each earned a silver, while Cailin Brown (10) of Crofton, Rylie Nobis (11) of Crofton and Emily Roberts (13) of Gambrils each earned bronze. Regan Ellis also took home two gold medals for Artistic FS4 and Interpretative FS3-4, with Allison Fortney taking home the bronze in Interpretative FS3-4. Sydney Behling (11) of Millersville earned a gold medal in both Freestyle 5 and Artistic FS5. Ashley Strong (11) of Millersville took home two bronze medals in Freestyle 5 and Artistic FS5. Thirteen year old Jennifer Christie of Stevensville a first place gold for Freestyle 6. Several Jump and Spin Teams also faired well in competition. At the medium level the "Piney Ice Fairies" team of Rylie Roche, Hanna Schied, Alley Yates and Deanne Middlebusher won first place, while the Pine "Ice Jocks" team of Molly McAteer, Kylie Bulger, and Peyton Behling, won second. At the Intermediate level Piney's "The Free Spirits" team of Madlyn McAteer, Lauren Bulger, Lila Perry and Margaret Brown won first place, while the "Piney Blue Bells" team of Rylie Nobis, Emily Roberts, Regan Ellis and Hanne Kavalsky won third place. The "Piney Pink Ladies" high level team of Allison Fortney, Jennifer Christie, Lauren Risher, Niki Newcomb and Sydney Behling won second place. Several members of the POFST have also recently passed tests by the professional United States Figure Skating Association, including Grace Bloomfield, 11 of Sherwood Forest Ð Intermediate Moves, Lauren Risher - Preliminary Dance, Ashley Strong and Lauren Donnelly both have passed Pre-Preliminary Moves and Freestyle. Team member, Greg Triantafillides of Edgewater, also recently won a gold medal in the men's bronze level at the Washington Fig New Year's Competition, an adult's only USFS competition.
